You may remember falling for young Canadian star, Tate McRae’s vocals back last year when we featured her and her song ‘don’t be sad’ in the Fresh Pop Artist’s Spotlight | September 2020.
“But I don’t really care how bad it hurts, cause you broke me first.”
~Tate McRae
Released as the lead single of her second EP, Too Young to Be Sad, you broke me first debuted back on April 17, 2020 and instantly caught my attention, even more with Tate’s MTV pre-show VMA performance, great choreography, set, and lighting. Triple whammy.
A few months later in November, 29 year-old Australian, now Los Angeles based singer-songwriter, Sam Fischer, released a stripped back version of the synth heavy pop melody accompanied by a soft guitar and piano with vocals that’ll take your breath away.
“Fuck, I wish I wrote that. It’s too good.” ~Fischer exclaims at the end of the tune.
Clearly an admirer of Tate’s songwriting, Sam perfectly carries the emotions of heartache throughout his rendition and had my heart in pieces when he hit the falsetto. Whew, I wasn’t ready for that. Goosebumps on your arms, type falsetto.
Watch Sam’s version of the hit below. What version of you broke me first do you prefer?
